Pesten: Instructions

Rules

Pesten is a game for 2 to 5 players. Depending on the number of participants, up to 4 decks consisting of 52 cards each are used:

2 players: 2 full decks of 52 cards each
3 - 4 players: 3 full decks of 52 cards each
5 players: 2 full decks of 52 cards each
+ 2 jokers per deck

The player who starts the game may decide whether the game can be ended with a special card or not. This is set by clicking the "Finishing with a special card is allowed" checkbox in the game settings window.

Special cards

Joker: Player may change the suit and the next player must draw 5 cards
Ace: The direction of play is reversed
Jack: Player may change the suit
8: The next player must sit-out for 1 round
7: The player may play a second card
2: The next player must draw 2 cards

Reversal of the direction of play only comes into effect with 3 or more players. With only 2 players, the ace is a normal card.

Each player begins with a hand of 7 cards. One card is taken from the drawing stack and placed face-up on the table. This card forms the playing stack, to which players take turns in playing a card. Players may play one card each turn. Cards played must have either the same suit or face value of the uppermost card in the playing stack. If a player cannot play a card to the stack, they must draw a card from the drawing stack.

A jack can however always be played to the playing stack, regardless of which card is showing on the playing stack.

Like jacks, jokers can also be played regardless of which card is showing on the playing stack. As with jacks, the player who places the card on the playing stack may determine the suit. Additionally, the next player must also draw 5 cards from the drawing stack before he/she plays a card. However, should this player also be able to play a joker, the 5 card 'penalty' is effectively passed on the next player.

When a 2 card is played, the next player must draw 2 cards and may only play a joker or 2 card to the stack. If a player plays a 2 on top of a Joker card, the penalties are added together and the receiving player must draw 7 cards.

When an 8 is played, the next player must sit out for 1 round. When an Ace is played, the direction of play is reversed. By playing a 7 card to the stack, a player is allowed to play a second card.

Before playing their second last card, players must warn their opponents by knocking (click on the "Knock" button). If a player fails to do this, he/she must draw 2 cards as a penalty. By starting a game, you can set the following rules:

* Automatic knocking
* The number of penalty cards to be drawn
* Which cards players may not end the game with

If the game host has not clicked the "Finishing with a special card is allowed" checkbox in the game settings window, players must draw a card from the drawing stack when attempting to finish the game with a special card.
