It is assumed that Canasta came into being in 1939 in Urugay. From there it spread to Argentinia and to the USA before it gained world-wide fame. It was very popular in the 1950s and almost replaced Contract Bridge as the most popular card game.
Canasta (from Spanish canasta, basket) is a card game for 2 to 4 players. With 4 players it is played in 2 teams. Each player/team tries to get as many points as possible. Points will be earned by laying card combinations. The player, who reaches the previously agreed number of points first, wins the game.
Get started, lay lots of cards, form a Canasta (at least 7 cards in a meld) and rake in points!
